She was autumn.

Ours—assuming it was a matter of two—was understood to be complicated from the beginning, most likely due to my own fault and my sickly habit of counting the petals of every single flower in the garden, wanting to anticipate the fading before the scent could even bloom. Talk about "us" is difficult for me; not because of a bad memory, but rather because I continue to understand us a little more each day, and sometimes, a little less. But I can speak of her, of her idea, of what she was.

I couldn’t say she was light, though her pale face illuminated my memory more than she would ever dare to admit; nor would I call her darkness, yet her pitch-black eyes knew how to keep company with cold and somber moons, the kind that force you to seek shelter.

To wander through her in my memory was like stepping into a cold forest, one where the falling leaves silently announced the end; a slow and ochre prelude. She was autumn. Not the autumn of warm colors and cozy coffee afternoons, but that of bare branches, of the wind blowing with the strength of an unavoidable goodbye, and of the earth preparing itself to freeze.

She was that in-between season where beauty lies precisely in the fact that everything is about to die.

I, who was always a terrible sower and a devotee of lost causes, dedicated myself to gathering her dry leaves as if they were treasures, ignoring that the wind of her nature would eventually scatter them away. She promised no springtimes; she merely undressed the trees of my illusions, leaving me out in the open, shivering from the cold yet strangely grateful for the blizzard.

Sometimes I think her witchcraft was not about putting a spell on me, but about making me believe that the winter she brought with her was the only place worth living in. And now that the days grow shorter and the cold seeps once again into my lungs—those that still exhale her ashen smoke—I understand that no cathedral can withstand her passing. She was the wind that tore down temples, and I am the ash that insists on flying behind her, searching for one last mild afternoon that will never arrive.

I understand now, with a head slightly colder than I would wish, that she was never a destination, but a season. An inevitable transition that my emotional calendar was bound to cross. You cannot hold back the October wind, nor can you ask the fallen leaves to cling back to the branch; her nature is to fall, and mine is to watch her leave.

That is why, if I survive the winter currently freezing my bones, I know very well it won't be to see the flowers of April. I have no interest in the promise of spring or the warmth of new orchards. If I insist on not letting myself be buried by the snow, it is solely for the stubborn hope of turning the year around and running aground once more in her mild months; for the sole excuse of losing myself in her forest again and being, once more, devastated by her autumn.
